please support this documentary about the history and impact of cassette tapes. no it is not a charity or a big cause, but it is part of our musical heritage and history. the filmmakers are SO close to their goal and their is very little time left. if you are a child of the 80’s (or even 90’s) you know much you loved your tapes. consider giving like 5 bucks to support independent art! check out their kickstarter campaign

merry Christmas everybody.
when we get so excited about presents and decorating, it’s easy to forget the original Christmas present. the baby Jesus came to us an most unexpected way in a place where no one would want to hold their Christmas celebration…yet He was the most important and beautiful gift ever given…

He Was A Friend of Mine - Cat Power

Cat Power takes on the traditional folk song about the sudden death of a close friend. It’s a moving and touching rendition as she begins to sob at first and then powers through the song.
It is from a session recorded in 1998 and found here: http://captainsdead.com/cat-power-112398.html

Courtney Marie Andrews - For One I Knew

Courtney Marie Andrews is best discovered in the quiet of the evening in your local venue or coming out your home stereo. Don’t talk. Just listen. Her hauntingly beautiful voice carries us through and delivers us to another time. I am convinced she is an old soul and is trying to take us to a simpler time. Perhaps a time where young troubadours were celebrated for their….music. The new album (her third) is beautiful, clear, and touching. You can listen to the whole thing here by clicking Preview Album. Latch onto her and don’t let go. She is going places.

Rocky Votolato - True Devotion

Rocky Votolato is more than a heart on a sleeve, he is bleeding everywhere. And, wiether he is whispering or screaming…I am listening. Taking a few years hiatus; Rocky stopped writing music, contemplated taking his own life, researched religions, and eventually recommitted himself to life and music. The result is an album that must be heard. The mood goes from darkness to light as the album progresses. The perfect answers to the questions poised in his 2003 album, Suicide Medicine. Incredibly fragile and incredibly beautiful.

The National - High Violet

I discovered this band this year and ate up every bit I could find. This song (Sorrow) became a personal anthem of mine. With lyrics dealing with depression, living in America, anxiety, and dark humor this band album quickly won me over. High Violet is epic.

Jarrod Gorbel - The Devil’s Made a New Friend

The Honorary Title’s Jarrod Gorbel sets out without the moniker or major label support. He creates a heartfelt, honest, and often catchy album. This video is him singing the lead single with the amazing children choir at PS22.

Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

A wonderful debut from an amazing sounding album. Without a new Avett Brothers album this year, this was very welcomed into my collection. Don’t get me wrong, I love the single (Little Lion Men) but the album as a whole touches on a lot more than a messy break-up. It gives me chills and tears every time. This is the entry music to the heaven in my imagination.
